This month, we complete another successful food drop at Excel Junior School in Nangunga, Uganda. On this day, we dropped off 393 kilograms of rice, beans, and maize flour! This contribution, in addition to the matched contributions of parents, teachers, and others in the village, will feed around 300 students a hot, satisfying meal each day that will keep them engaged all school day long!!

Excel Junior School Lunch Program Launched!

It’s the day we all have been waiting for! The launch of our First School Lunch Program!! The girls and boys of Excel Junior School in Nangunga, Uganda will enjoy a hot meal of nutritious food each day of school.

Take a look at some of the photos from our launch! We want to especially thank our gracious donors who give so generously to make these meals a reality for these children.

The overarching goals for this school lunch program is to increase nutritious food intake, reduce food insecurity, and foster a more optimistic view of the future. We also aim to improve school performance and attendance!

It’s take a community to feed so many children everyday. Volunteers from the village of Nangunga graciously volunteer their time and skill in preparing nutritious meals for these students.

Our Feeding Villages volunteers in Uganda worked closely with school administrators and parents to launch this school lunch program, a first for Excel Junior School. We plan to feed upwards of 300 students each and every day!

We hope that our school lunch program at Excel Junior School will help fight malnutrition and hunger for hundreds of children. These hot lunches will have the potential to improve student’s school attendance and performance, and to even increase household food security.

Food brings people together. And children are no exception to this.

All children deserve the chance to succeed. School administrators, parents, and Feeding Villages volunteers are hard at work to create profound, generational change at Excel Junior School in Nangunga, Uganda.

Feeding Villages set to Launch School Lunch Program in Nangunga, Uganda

Feeding Villages is proud to announce our partnership with Excel Primary School in Nangunga, Uganda. Starting in August, we will begin serving all 300 of their students a nutritionally-balanced lunch each and every school day!

This school lunch program will be a lifeline for 300 students and their parents living in a region plagued by malnutrition and food insecurity.

Based on our interviews with parents, most of the their children attend school with nothing to eat for the entire day.

By providing a daily lunch for each student, we hope to:

Improve nutrition and overall health
Improve academic performance
Improve attendance of students
Support the local economy by purchasing food near the village

The school lunches will consist of items such as rice, beans, nuts, dairy, fruits, and/or vegetables. Variety and portion size will depend on market prices and total funds available for the month.

Students from Excel Primary School congregate outside during recess. There are ten distinct grade levels: 3 years for kindergarten, 4 years for lower primary, and 3 years for upper primary.

OUR COMMITMENT: MATCHING DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR

The launch of this school lunch program is the result of a close collaboration with school administrators, educators, parents, and volunteers from Feeding Villages.

School administrators, educators, and parents from Excel Primary School will set aside funds each month to contribute to this program. At minimum, their aim is to raise $275 USD each month. Feeding Villages will then match their contributions dollar for dollar. The total funds generated will go towards purchasing and preparing lunches for these students.

By matching funds, we hope to encourage giving from within the community while demonstrating our enduring commitment to their children’s health and well-being. Feeding Villages will continue to meet periodically with these leaders to ensure the program is addressing the needs for all stakeholders involved.

Our meetings with school administrators, parents, and educators have been extremely beneficial! We look forward to our partnership with these community leaders.
