September is off to a great start! https://www.feedingvillages.org/september-is-off-to-a-great-start/ Tue, 01 Sep 2020 19:41:38 +0000 https://www.feedingvillages.org/?p=952 Our team in Uganda delivered 150 kgs of rice and 150 kgs of Posho to dozens of families in need within the main city of Kampala.Thankfully, the incidence of COVID-19 in Uganda is very low in comparison to other countries. While the country has been successful in taming the spread of the virus, the indirect impact to small businesses and farmers have hit hard.

A recent survey by the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) in Uganda shows that three-quarters of the surveyed businesses have laid off employees. The survey also found that micro and small businesses experienced a larger decline in business activity than medium to large firms.Without work, people can’t earn a wage. And without money, people can’t feed their family. Our monthly food assistance goes a long way for those families who are struggling to get by. However, amidst the struggle and difficulty lie the spirit of the Ugandan people – we continue to witness their strength, resourcefulness, and perseverance in the face of great adversity.

Glad we could provide 10 deserving families a variety of foods including potatoes, onions, dates, pasta, pasta sauce, orange juice, honey, salt, bananas, and granola bars. We also provided each family hand sanitizer. The families we help locally are of Somali descent and have their own, unique stories to share. All are refugees.

These families have been forced to flee their country because of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group; a refugee either cannot return home or is afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.

We’ve gotten a lot of encouragement to help support the local Somali Refugee population in providing much needed food assistance. For this first drop, we provided 10 families milk, eggs, pasta, potatoes, onions, cooking oil, dates, and fruit snacks for the kids

Nonetheless, we work tirelessly to get food to those who need it…while taking precautions ourselves and being safe.

Feeding Villages was able to donate 150 kgs of rice, 900 eggs, and 30 multi-pack soap bars to families in need in Kawempe and Nabweru districts in Kampala, Uganda! We will keep pushing forward and doing what is necessary to provide for those who can’t provide for themselves.

Both the demand and price of food is HIGH in Kampala, Uganda. With many people out of work, we wanted to help out and do our part. Our team delivered much need food assistance to 30 families in Kawempe and Nabweru districts in Kampala, Uganda! Each family received rice, posho, and bars of soap. We distributed a total of 150kgs of rice, 150 kgs of posho, and 30 packages of soap.

April Update! https://www.feedingvillages.org/april-update/ Sat, 04 May 2019 19:08:05 +0000 https://www.feedingvillages.org/?p=693 Here’s another update from Feeding Villages! We’ve been working hard in Nangunga, Uganda and wanted to share with you what we’ve accomplished in April!

  • On April 28th, we distributed 100 kgs of rice, 50 kgs of beans, 50 kgs of peanuts, 150 eggs, and 6 tins of powered milk to families living in Nangunga, Uganda as part of our Food Assistance Initiative!
  • We were able to raise over $500 for our Clean Water Initiative in Nangunga! Thanks to all the donors who generously contributed to this project. Feeding Villages contributed the rest of the funds needed to launch this project. The contractor we’ve hired for this project has just this past week began prepping the site for the rehab! Stay tuned for updates on this project over in the next couple of weeks!
  • Our team in Uganda met with primary school administrators to discuss details around a school lunch program where each of the 300 children at the primary school would be guaranteed a belly-filling meal. For a meal of fortified rice, it would cost $2500 to feed all 300 students for 3 months. That’s under $10 per student for 3 months of rice lunches! We are looking into additional funding opportunities to include beans, dairy, and fruit to make lunches more balanced. If you would like to donate to this cause, please do so here.

  • On March 31st, our team in Uganda distributed 100 kgs of rice, 50 kgs of beans, and 50 kgs of peanuts to over 45 families! Since we’ve began Feeding Villages, we’ve given nearly 1000 kgs of food and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! 
  • We distributed 480 fresh eggs to pregnant women and families with young children. Not only do adults and kids love the taste eggs, they are among the most nutritious foods on the planet, containing high-quality protein, fats, and essential vitamins and minerals. We plan to make eggs a staple item in our donation kits moving forward!
  • We have a meeting scheduled in April with local primary school administrators to finalize the demo garden site and determine a construction date. We will invite a local agronomist to come test soil quality, determine an appropriate mix of crops, and craft an irrigation system. 
  • In the same meeting with school administrators, we plan to discuss a school breakfast and lunch program. As of now, there is no such program in place where every child is guaranteed a meal. Most children in Nangunga come to school without having eaten breakfast and do not eat lunch unless their parents provide them the funds to do so. Studies show that children who go to school hungry may suffer an inability to concentrate and often fall behind academically. Hungry kids are more likely to miss school because of illness, disrupt class, and develop behavioral problems as teenagers.

  • Feeding Villages continues to visit and distribute much need food in the village of Nangunga
    • On February 24th, our Uganda team distributed 100 kgs of rice, 50 kgs of beans, and 50 kgs of peanuts to over 45 families! 
    • We also donated 8 large units of fortified, powered milk to pregnant women with infant/young children and 50 bars of soap to help keep hands clean prior to eating! 
  • Feeding Villages will be launching a new initiative called Seeds of Hope
    • Our goal is to erect nutritious vegetable and fruit gardens in Nangunga and other villages in Uganda. 
    • These gardens will not only provide nutritious food to those most in need, it will serve as an educational center for all villagers to come and learn more about how to grow these nutritious foods at home! 
  • Feeding Villages launched a blog
    • Read about nutrition in Uganda, dive into real life stories from villagers, and connect with other like minded contributors on our blog. Fresh content is posted regularly!
